It is a widely known fact that bone char is extensively used by the sugar industry as a decolorizing filter, which allows sugar to achieve its white colour. This is a matter of concern – health wise as well as ethically if there is bone char in refined sugar or if one is having vegan sugar only.
The regular supermarket sugar brands may be obtaining their sugar from several different refineries, making it nearly impossible to know whether it has been filtered with bone char. Aware of this gap, VOICE Society and Beauty without Cruelty jointly got five randomly chosen brands of sugar samples tested at one of NABL’s (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) test labs. So, what do we have here?
Five regular-selling brands of packaged sugar were purchased from Delhi-NCR market and DNA test was conducted to verify any presence of animal bone.
