What’s wrong with palm oil?

Palm oil is the most commonly used ingredient in food products including biscuits, pizzas, and chips among others. The oil also enjoys the biggest market share in the Indian food market. It is also preferred by the food industry as well as the fast-food chains, and the street vendors. But not everyone knows how the increasing usages of palm oil make our food unhealthy. Palm oil has a good amount of saturated fats and this makes the oil unhealthy. According to WHO, the intake of saturated fats shouldn’t be more than 10 per cent of the recommended energy intake i.e. about 2000 kcal/day. So, one shouldn’t be consuming more than 200 kcal derived from saturated fats i.e. 22g of saturated fats.

Compared to other oils, palm oil has higher amounts of saturated fats. Consumption of saturated fat can cause cholesterol build up in the blood vessels as well as raise the level of LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol in the blood.  The following article will give a better idea of how to check the palm oil in your pack of biscuits, pizzas and other food products.
