Learn Facts About Coffee

In this article, we will reveal things about coffee which you may or may not already know. It’s an interesting mix of information from types of coffee to how coffee beans are cultivated.

What is coffee?

Coffee is a beverage served hot or with ice, prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plantcalled coffee beans.

Coffee beans

Coffee beans come from 2 coffee plants called Arabica and Robusta. These plants grow best in an area know as the Bean Belt – the band around the earth in between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer.

Types of Coffee

Coffee can be roasted or made from grounded coffee. It is the preparation of coffee that is done differently. Here are some of the types of coffee based on the method of preparation. A buying guide for coffee makers can help you make these coffees at home.

Filter coffee: Also called drip coffee, it is prepared by using finely ground coffee placed on paper through which steaming hot water is passed and the final brew is obtained in the decoction.

Plunger or cafetiere: Coarsely grounded coffee is placed in a pot over which hot water is added. Coffee and water are brewed for some time, after which the mixture is left to steep for a brief period of four to five minutes. Once done, the plunger is pushed hard to separate the coffee grounds from the coffee infusion.

Espresso: The coffee ground is very fine, over which pressurized hot water is passed. The coffee obtained is filled inside the cups placed beneath the outlet. The coffee also has a layer of fine and creamy foam.

How does the coffee reach your mug?

It takes 3-4 years for a coffee seed to grow into a tree that produces coffee beans.Seeds are first planted in nurseries. 6 months to 1 year later, seedlings are transplanted to open fields. Workers must prepare the planting ground for the small seedlings by loosening and grading the soil.

Approximately 2 years after transplantation, the trees begin to flower and the flowers produce a small fruit known as a coffee cherry. In the centre of each cherry are two green coffee beans.

Coffee plants grow best where there is plenty of rainfall at certain times of the year and thrive in a well-drained, rich, volcanic soil. The plant does not like sudden changes in temperature, and frost can severely damage or kill it.During harvest, coffee cherries are hand picked. It takes approximately 2,000 cherries that is 4,000 beans to produce one pound of roasted coffee.

After being husked, sorted and bagged, the green coffee beans are shipped from the countries where they were grown to the countries where they will be manufactured and consumed

How Much Coffee Can You Drink a Day?

An average 148 ml cup of ground coffee contains 85 mg of caffeine (that’s 57 mg of caffeine per 100 ml). Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee.
