World Consumer Rights Day- Building a Digital World-Consumers can Trust
National World Consumer Rights Day is observed on March 15 each year as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights. WORLD Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers, demanding that those rights are respected and protected.
Consumer confidence and trust are central to the success of the digital economy. The rapid development of digital technology has delivered social and economic benefits for millions of consumers around the world. It has connected people within and between countries, enabled people to easily access information and services and created choice and convenience in ways that could not be imagined a generation ago.
However, the continued success of the digital economy will only be possible if further developments are not just available to all but trusted enough to be integrated into people's everyday lives. Digital consumer protection and empowerment should be an integral part of the regulatory framework to effectively address the complexity of digital markets and the experience of consumers online.
What is digital consumer trust and how can we build it?
Digital technology is having a dramatic impact on consumers around the world. By 2020, 52% of the world's population will be online – this means the number of people accessing the internet will have grown by a third in just five years.
Technology has given many consumers more choice, convenience and information, but important issues remain. A concerted, co-ordinated effort by governments, regulators and businesses must be made to give the offline population access to quality, affordable connections, to end unfair online practices, to make sure data is kept safe and secure and to help consumers know which services they can trust.
Consumer protection and empowerment are crucial to building trust and confidence in digital technology. World Consumer Rights Day will provide an excellent opportunity for us to set the agenda for a digital world that champions access, choice and security for consumers.
On 15th March,2017 G20 consumer summit will be held in Berlin, Germany this year which will aim to highlight the importance of consumer protection and empowerment in the digital economy.
This year the theme for the WCRD (World Consumer Rights Day) is "Building a Digital World Consumers can Trust". Today the world is moving to digital era and the digital technology has an immense impact on the consumers. There is need of consumer protection and empowerment in the digital economy. Though it provides more of benefits in our day to day activities concurrently it creates some threats too like cyber crime. Secure payments, accessible information, data security and data protection are some of the examples in this regard. - Use long passwords made up of numbers, letters, and symbols and using special characters.
- Set up your password recovery options and keep them up-to-date
- Use Secure Networks-Be careful whenever you go online using network you do not know or trust- like using free Wi-Fi at your local café.
- Connect only to secure website- Always connect to websites starting from https://, www.
- Install the official mobile Apps of your bank on your smartphone.
- Register for SMS and email alerts for financial transactions.
- Beware of misleading online advertisements that appear too good to be true.
- If you are not active on a social media website or forum then deactivate your account.
- Keep records of every internet purchase and transactions
- Do not close the browser without signing out from the e banking websites
- Protects your personal information and backup data on all devices in the event of theft, loss or a crash
- Regularly review your email-account for unwanted and suspicious activity.
Safety steps during E-commerce activities
- Always type out the site address specified by the bank/shopping sites.
- Never click on the site address received by other means/promotional emails/SMS.
- Ensure that for every bank/credit card transaction you receive an SMS and email alert by registering mobile number as well as email with bank/brokerage.
- Use virtual keyboards
- Keep record of all your transactions at these sites and destroy them only after confirming all transactions including receipt of goods or services ordered.
- Close all windows after the transaction is complete.
- Preferably close browser as well; restart the browser if needed
- Cross-check the transaction
