Consumer forum asks bank to compensate customer for breaking locker without following RBI norms

Punjab National Bank’s officials broke the locker of a customer over pending rent without following RBI norms. The aggrieved consumer complained about this to the court, which instructed the bank to pay Rs 50,000 with nine per cent yearly interest as physical and mental harassment charges to the customer since the date of filing of the case in 2010. The court also asked the bank to pay legal expenses of Rs 20,000 to the petitioner.

As per RBI norms, the bank is supposed to send three notices at set intervals, maintain the record of responses from the customer if any, and in case of no revert, has to form a committee. Only on a resolution of the committee can it open any locker.
