Refrigerator Storage – How to keep Food Safe in Refrigerator

Refrigerator food safety is an issue of great concern especially if one stores food for longer duration. Among a few important things to remember when it comes to refrigerator storage, one should know how to prevent spoilage and bacteria growth in the food. The goal of keeping food safe is to prevent yourself and others from being infected with food borne diseases. One of the best ways to keep foods safe in freezer storage is by maintaining proper refrigerator temperature.

To protect your family from food borne diseases, proper refrigerator storage is required. Did you know that the numbers of bacteria that cause food borne illnesses double every 20 minutes? Setting the right refrigerator temperature is one of the best ways to slow the growth of these bacteria and food safety then becomes a major cause for concern!

How to set the fridge’s temperature control settings

  • Above 40 degrees F (4.4 degree C) of food compartment is considered an unsafe zone which means that food is susceptible to spoiling or growing of harmful bacteria – therefore set the thermostat accordingly.
  • Check if your fridge is set to the recommended settings from the manual
  • Use a thermometer to measure internal temperature (summer and winter)
  • Adjust your settings until you have 3 degrees C (fridge) and -18 degrees C (freezer)
  • Maintain good airflow inside the fridge to avoid hot and cold spots

Refrigerator Storage in Case of Power Outage

  • In India, power outage or load shedding as we know it locally is a major issue in most parts of the country. In some areas power outage is only for a few hours or maybe less but in some parts it lasts for several hours.
  • Keep doors to refrigerators and freezers closed to conserve cold air. This will prevent your food from getting spoilt and will keep food frozen for up to a day.
  • If outage in your area lasts for several hours or more than a day, then the best practice is to keep dry ice at home. Since meat, fish, milk and other poultry and dairy products get spoiled very quickly, a chest of dry ice is the best way to keep food safe.
  • Discard any perishable food which is not stored with adequate precautions if kept above 4 degree C for more than 4 to 5 hours.

Remember there is nothing above your health. If discarding food means wastage of money, then so be it, as spoiled food is equivalent to inviting food borne illnesses.
