GST stands for the goods and services tax. It is mandatory for every dealer with a turnover of INR 20 lakh (10 lakh in some states) to register for GST. How to Register for GST - The Steps
Visit the Website
The first step is to visit the GST portal (https://www.gst.gov.in/) and click on the Register Now mentioned under the Taxpayers (Normal) tab that can be seen on the left-hand side.
Provide Basic Information
The next step is to enter the details required in Part A. Click on new registration and click on Taxpayer in the subsequent drop down. Then you need to select the state and district from more drop downs. After that, enter the name of your business, the business PAN, an email address and a mobile number. Make sure that the email id and mobile number you write down are correct as all the relevant OTPs will be sent to them. Once you have entered the required information, click on proceed.
Get the OTP
As soon as you click on proceed, you will receive an OTP on the mobile and email. If you don’t get it, click on resend OTP. If you get it instantly, enter it and click on continue.
Get a TRN
When you do that, you will receive a Temporary Reference Number or TRN on your mobile and email id. Be sure to note it down as it will help you get a step closer to GST registration number.
Share the TRN
The next step that takes you closer to getting a GST registration number is to revisit the GST portal and click on register now. This time click on Temporary Reference Number and share the TRN you noted down. Don’t forget to enter the captcha code before clicking on Proceed. Again, you will receive an OTP on the mobile and email id you registered. Enter it and click on proceed.
Fill More Details
At this stage, you will see that the status of your application is shown as a draft. So, you will need to click on the edit icon. Once you do, you will need to fill in the appropriate details in Part B that has 10 sections. You also need to submit several documents at this stage.
Some of the documents you will need to submit to apply for a GST number are photographs, bank account details, the constitution of the taxpayer, an authorization form and proof for the place of business.
Submit the Application
Once you have filled all the vital details, you should tick on the declaration. Then you will be ready to submit the application. Remember that every company needs to submit the GST registration application by using DSC. You can either use e-Sign or make use of EVC. In the former, an OTP will be sent to Aadhaar registered number, and in the latter, the OTP will be sent to the registered mobile.
Get the Application Reference Number (ARN)
In the next stage, a success message will be displayed and an Application Reference Number is sent to the mobile and email id you registered. You can use this ARN to check the ARN status.
